The Blaneau Gwent Borough Tournament

The Blaneau Gwent Borough Tournament for Short Mat bowlers in the area was held on the w/e of 1st/2nd April at the Abertillery Leisure Centre. The event is organized by the Leisure Dept of Blaneau Gwent and the Gwent Short Mat Bowls Association. 32 teams were entered for the Pairs Tournament and 24 teams for the Triples tournament, both events were organized on a Round Robin basis for the first rounds so that every team had at least 2 games. In the Pairs events teams from Llangynidr, Llangattock, Soffryd, Pontnewynyd and Abertillery Bowls Centre were through to the quarter final and the semi-final saw hard fought matches between Llangynidr, Soffryd and Pontnewynyd. The final was a close match between John Dunn and David Morgan and Bill Bacon and Sylvia Haynes all from Llangynidr Short Mat Bowls Club. John Dunn and David Morgan were the winners by 1 shot.

In the Triples event, again excellent bowling was seen in the First Round matches with teams from Roseheyworth, Pontnewynyd, Brynithel, Llangattock , Trevethin, Goytre and Abertillery Bowls Centre getting into the quarter finals. In the semi-finals there were hard fought matches with close results between Dave Gibbons team from Pontnewynyd and Bryan Green’s team from Abertillery Bowls Centre with Dave Gibbons going through to the Final, the other finalists were the three ladies from Llangattock, Gay Best, Carole Lewis and Lil Jones. Dave Gibbons, Chris Martin and Bill Bruton proved to be too strong for the Llangattock team and went out as the overall winners. The trophies were presented to the Winners and Runners up by the Assistant Director of Leisure Mr. D. Watkins. All the Short Mat Bowlers were grateful to the Leisure Dept. especially Simon Williams for putting together and organizing the event.  GWENT TEAM IN NATIONAL COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Gwent County Short Mat Bowls Team played in the National Counties Tournament held at Llandrindod recently, when they played against County Teams from Monmouthshire and Pembrokeshire, the County Team finished second overall behind Pembrokeshire. The Triples team of Nick Paul, Larry Bruton and Diane Gibbons did well to win three of their 4 matches but were unfortunate to meet a very strong Pembrokeshire team which prevented them getting maximum points. Chris Martin playing in the Singles event won 2 games and drew his third game; he came up against the reigning Welsh Singles Champion in his fourth game and was unable to get maximum points. The Fours team of Gay Best, Lyn Vaughan, David Smith, and Diane Smith also obtained 5 points and again were beaten by a superior Pembrokeshire team.

Other members of the County team were Dave Gibbons, Albert Gibbons, G.Jones, M. Thomas, J.Dunn, D.Morgan, H.Williams, M.Bennett, W.Bacon, D.Taylor, V.Taylor, K.Wanklin and M.Annett. Gwent Short Mat Bowlers will be taking part in the Welsh National Championships in March and April and will also be getting ready for the Blaneau Gwent Borough Championships to be held on April 1st & 2nd at Abertillery Leisure Centre.

Following our AGM, the Chairman of Gwent is now (the) Bill Bacon.
